MAY 26 - 21H
HAWKINS - LAURO - SANDERS (UK/FR)
first encounter by three top improvisors
Time for the daily musical moment of artist in residence Audrey Lauro.
Because we don't care about Brexit and given the day's arrival already of English godfathers of improvisation Weston and Watts, we've taken the opportunity to also invite the refined drummer/percussionist Mark Sanders and the remarkable pianist Alexander Hawkins.
Alexander Hawkins (Louis Moholo-Moholo, Evan Parker, Mulatu Astatke...) is a unique voice in contemporary music with a distinctive sound, chiseled by his love for free improvisation and his fascination for structures.
He clearly likes a challenge. After solo work ('Iron Into Wind (Pears From An Elm)') and a duo CD with Tomeka Reid ('Shards And Constellations'), he effortlessly switches to a sixteen-piece ensemble including Evan Parker and strings.
Mark Sanders has had a career taking in many styles and genres, this history informs his now mainly Free Jazz /Free Improvisation based work, but he also works in theatre, dance, contemporary classical and conceptual art situations, performing in countries around the world including Japan, USA, Morocco, South Africa, Canada, Australia, Mozambique and Brazil.
He has worked with many major US based improvising musicians including Henry Grimes, Roscoe Mitchel (Art Ensemble of Chicago), Roswell Rudd (Steve Lacy) and has a duo with Nicole Mitchel (Black Earth Ensemble), Elliott Sharp, Bill Laswell, and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth).
Recent work in the groups of Evan Parker, Shabaka Huthchins, Seb Roachford, Trevor Watts and John Butcher. This will be a concert to look forward to...
