Seppe, Hugo and Paul is op zijn minst een opmerkelijk piano trio van drie verschillende generaties van de Europese improvisatie: de Belgische pianist Seppe Gebruers (1990), de Portugese bassist Hugo Antunes (1974) en de legendarische Duitse percussionist Paul Lovens (1949). Gebruers bespeeld namelijk twee vleugelpiano's (tegelijkertijd) waarvan er één piano een kwarttoon lager is gestemd. Welkom in een onorthodoxe wereld van microtonale spanning.
"De magie van goede vrije muziek bestaat er niet enkel in dat er iets ontstaat vanuit het niets, maar dat dat iets in het beste geval kan zorgen voor een meeslepend of desoriënterend effect dat collectief ervaren wordt, maar verdomd moeilijk in woorden uit te drukken valt. Je hebt hier niet enkel te maken met een internationaal trio (België, Portugal, Duitsland), maar ook met drie generaties muzikanten die bij elkaar komen. Hugo Antunes hing jarenlang rond in Brussel en groeide uit tot een van de meest veelzijdige en complete bassisten van zijn generatie, met een indrukwekkende controle over diverse technieken. Seppe, Hugo and Paul is to say the least a remarkable piano trio of three different generations of European improvisors: the Belgian pianist Seppe Gebruers (1990), the Portuguese bassist Hugo Antunes (1974) and the legendary German percussionist Paul Lovens (1949). Gebruers plays two grand pianos simultaneously, one of which has been tuned a quarter tone lower. Welcome to this unorthodox world of microtonal tension.
Gebruers has a particular style and vision ans is unique on the Belgian improvisation scene. Hugo Antunes has an impressive control over various techniques and grew into one of the most versatile and complete bass players of his generation. Percussionist Paul Lovens is one of the icons of free music, an enigmatic figure with an unlikely instinct and a completely own language and set-up.
