Samuel Blaser is Zwitsers trombonist en rising star in de hedendaagse avontuurlijke muziek. Hij pendelt tussen New York en Berlijn en is een muzikant die de jazzgeschiedenis tot zijn eigen idioom heeft gemaakt. Hij bezit een krachtige muzikaliteit gespannen over klassieke intonatie en improvisatie. Zijn vloeiende lijnen staan soms in schril contrast met de hardere muzieklijnen van de gitarist. Zo verschijnt zijn muziek in haar veelzijdigheid als een panopticum van de hedendaagse technieken in improvisatie en bouwt hij keer op keer spanning op via nieuwe muzikale facetten.

In een tijd waarin muzikanten meer dan ooit tevoren proberen gehoord te worden, lijkt het paradoxaal dat zeldzame muzikanten zoals Samuel Blaser hieruit kunnen uitstijgen. Sinds zijn debuut 2007 als leider, 7th Heaven (Between the Lines), heeft Blaser zich ontwikkeld op een bijna onbegrijpelijke tempo, van een straight-ahead hard bopper als twintiger, een innovatieve free jazzer en steeds zoeken componist/bandleider op zijn dertigste. Juist zijn kwaliteiten in improvisatie werd reeds menigmaal bejubeld door de media over de gehele wereld.

Geboren en getogen in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Zwitserland, woonde Blaser in New York City voor vele jaren alvorens te verhuizen naar Berlijn, waar hij momenteel verblijft. Hij kreeg trombone lessen op de leeftijd van 9, en zijn vroege belangen varieerden van Zwitserse volksmuziek tot Amerikaanse R & B en jazz. Hij ging naar het conservatorium op zijn 14de en studeerde verder in 2002. Daar verzamelde hij prijzen in zowel de jazz en klassieke, incluis de 2000 Benny Golson Prize. Deelname aan de Vienna Art Orchestra en de Europese Radio Big Band leidde uiteindelijk tot een Fulbright Scholarship en het faciliteren van zijn studies in de Verenigde Staten op de SUNY Purchase College Conservatory of Music. Samuel won een jaar later, de J.J. Johnson Prize. In zijn relatief korte carrière heeft hij reeds intens samengewerkt met de Zwitserse percussie-legende Pierre Favre, pianist Hal Galper, drummer John Hollenbeck, saxofonist Michael Blake, François Houle's 5 + 1-groep, Grammy Award winnende producer Robert Sadin en meest recentelijk met Billy Mintz.

Voor dit trio heeft hij zich al geruime tijd geschaard met straf volk.

Gitarist Marc Ducret werd geboren in Parijs in 1957. Als autodidact begon hij zich te manifesteren in verschillende groepen (dans en folk inbegrepen), en in de studio, nog voor het bereiken van de leeftijd van 20. In 1986 werd hij lid van de eerste French National Jazz Orchestra. In de late jaren '80 maakte Ducret naam met zijn eigen trio en toerde door Europa, Afrika en Azië. In 1991 begon hij te werken met Tim Berne en ging spelen met Berne in Caos Totale, Bloodcount en Big Satan. Ducret heeft verschillende solo-opnames op zijn naam staan, uitgebracht op de labels Screwgun en Winter & Winter. In de late jaren '90 vormde Ducret ook een Tentet om muziek van de jaren '6 te exploreren. Zijn passages in New York gingen nooit ongemerkt voorbij.

Peter Bruun begon met drummen op de Ritmische Childrens School in Vesterbro in Kopenhagen op de leeftijd van drie. Dit werd een levenslange onderdompeling in drums, muziek en compositie. Hij werd toegelaten tot de Ritmische Conservatorium in Kopenhagen, op de leeftijd van achttien jaar. Na 3 jaar beëindigde hij zijn formeel onderwijs om te reizen in India en Brazilië en zette zijn studie verder op zijn eentje. Peter is een actief lid van ILK (onafhankelijk label van Kopenhaven) en een van de oprichters van de band Eggs Laid By Tigers die hun eerste album Under The Mile Off Moon uitbrachten in 2012. Peter's meest recente wapenfeit is Unintended Consequences en onderzoekt de grenzen tussen compositie, instant composing en improvisatie.

Samuel Blaser is a shooting star as a trombonist. A native of Switzerland who now regularly commutes between New York and Berlin, he is a musician who has internalized all that jazz history has produced and commands over a powerful musicality. Characteristic of his talent and ability is his pristine classical intonation and free improvisation.

Within his trio's sound, Samuel Blaser's smooth flowing lines can at times contrast sharply with guitarist Marc Ducret's harsher statements. A type of contrast that reminds us that tension and contradiction can be powerful elements within music and art. With their third man, the versatile percussionist Peter Bruun, they venture into bold territory combining familiar and unusual musical worlds to create a new sound experience.

At a time when more musicians are trying to be heard than ever before, rare gems like Samuel Blaser seem paradoxically, to rise above it all. Since his 2007 debut as a leader, 7th Heaven (Between the Lines), Blaser has grown at an almost incomprehensible rate, from a straight-ahead hard bopper in his mid-twenties to an innovative free player and ever-searching composer and bandleader in his early thirties - one whose improvisational strength has received high praise from the media world over.

In his relatively short career, Blaser has worked with Swiss percussion legend Pierre Favre, pianist Hal Galper, drummer John Hollenbeck, saxophonist Michael Blake and François Houle's 5+1 group; he has worked closely with Grammy Award winning producer Robert Sadin and most recently with Billy Mintz.
2015 will see Blaser touring with two trios: one with guitarist Marc Ducret featuring Danish drummer Peter Bruun and the other with French pianist Benoit Delbecq and American drummer Gerry Hemingway. As of November, Blaser is back on the road with his original quartet to promote his new album Spring Rain (Whirlwind Recordings) an homage to Jimmy Giuffre, with Russ Lossing on piano, Drew Gress on bass and drummer Gerald Cleaver.

For this trio he has gathered already a long time ago these great musicians.

Guitarist Marc Ducret was born in Paris in 1957. A self-taught musician, he began working in various groups (dance and folk included), and in the studio, before reaching the age of 20. In 1986, he became a member of the first French National Jazz Orchestra. Also in the late '80s, Ducret led his own trio and toured Europe, Africa, and Asia. In 1991, he began working with Tim Berne and went on to play with Berne in Caos Totale, Bloodcount, and Big Satan. Ducret has several solo recordings to his credit, released on Berne's Screwgun label and the Winter & Winter label. In the late '90s, Ducret formed a tentet, Seven Songs, to explore music of the '60s.

Peter Bruun started playing drums at the Rythmic Childrens School in Vesterbro in Copenhagen at the age of three. This became a life-long immersion into drums, music and composition. He was admitted to the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen, at the age of eighteen. After 3 years he discontinued his formal education to travel in India and Brasil and continue his study on his own. Peter is an active member of ILK (Independent Label of København) and a founding member of the band Eggs Laid By Tigers who released their first Album "Under The Mile Off Moon" in 2012. Peter's most resent release is called Unintended Consequences and explores the borders between composition, instant composing and improvisation.
