Waarom zouden twee rockmuzikanten zich wagen aan één van de monstres sacrés der klassieke liedkunst? Adriano Cominotto en Pieter-Jan De Smet - die al menigmaal een podium deelden - ontdekten bij wijze van toeval hun gezamenlijke liefde en bewondering voor de Schubert liederen. Hun appreciatie mondde uit in een ware challenge: ze dompelden zich onder, met veel respect voor de originele partituur en de lyrisch-poëtische kwaliteiten ervan, in Schubert's 'Winterreise'. Daarmee proberen ze de allerdonkerste, en ook één van de meest complexe van Schuberts liederencycli, naar hun hand te zetten.

Adriano Cominotto op accordeon en Pieter-Jan De Smet als zanger, werpen met deze verrassende combinatie een nieuw licht op het klassiek repertoire. De piano des pauvres en de niet klassieke stem, tonen meer dan ooit de universele kwaliteiten van deze Schubert-compositie aan.

Hun interpretatie boet dan ook niets in aan diepte en gelaagdheid. Het is en blijft een melancholisch aangrijpende muzikale trip die aantoont dat Schubert, samen met Wilhelm Müller de toenmalige woorddichter, singer-songwriters avant la lettre waren. Voor de kenners is het een verrijking, en zeker een verrassing. Voor de niet-kenners een ontdekking. En voor de uitvoerders? Een engagement en eerbetoon, welliswaar in een iets rauwere versie.

Why would two rock musicians venture into one of the monstres sacrés of classical song art? Adriano Cominotto and Pieter-Jan De Smet - who often shared a stage - discovered by coincidence their mutual love and admiration for the Schubert songs. Their appreciation resulted in a true challenge: they submerged themselves, with great respect for the original score and its lyrical-poetic qualities, in Schubert's 'Winterreise'. In doing so, they try to manage and embody one of the darkest, and also one of the most complex of Schubert's song cycles.

Adriano Cominotto on accordion and Pieter-Jan De Smet as singer, with this surprising combination cast a new light on the classical repertoire. The piano des pauvres and the non-classical trained voice show more than ever the universal qualities of this Schubert composition.

Their interpretation, therefore, does not sacrifice anything in depth and stratification. It is and remains a melancholy moving musical trip that shows that Schubert, together with Wilhelm Müller were the then word poet, singer-songwriters avant la lettre. For connoisseurs it is an enrichment, and certainly a surprise. A discovery for the non-connoisseurs. And for the executors? A commitment and tribute, albeit in a slightly rawer version.
