Een Trio-cd opnemen met als sidemen bassist Gary Peacock en drummer Paul Motian? Nee, het is niet enkel Keith Jarrett gegeven. De Italiaanse Brusselaar Augusto Pirodda moet zowat het best bewaarde geheim in de Belgische jazzscène zijn.

In zijn kwartet speelt Ben Sluijs, één van de sterkhouders van de Belgische jazz van zijn generatie en één van Belgiës meest lyrische en poëtische jazzsaxofonisten. Als ritmesectie wist Augusto ook straf uit te pakken: de Italiaanse bassist Manolo Cabras (Toots Thielemans, Enrico Rava, Charles Gayle, ...) waarmee hij al meer dan 20 jaar musiceert en de Tsjechische drummer Marek Patrman, een niet weg te denken speler in de Belgische jazzscène. Cabras en Patrman zijn de spreekwoordelijke 4 handen op één buik.

Het pianospel van Pirodda (vaak simpel en melodisch, maar bij momenten ook onstuimig en nerveus) valt opvallend goed samen met de muzikale gevoeligheid van Ben Sluijs. Het contrast tussen deze twee werelden maakt hun muziek heel open en onvoorspelbaar. Cabras en Patrman, die zowel een toonaangevende dan wel ondersteunende rol kunnen aannemen, zorgen ervoor dat piano en sax een maximale vrijheid genieten.

Recording a Trio CD with sideman the likes of bass player Gary Peacock and drummer Paul Motian? No, it's not only given to Keith Jarrett. The Italian Brussels-based Augusto Pirodda has to be the best kept secret in the Belgian jazz scene.

Ben Sluijs plays in this quartet, one of the strongholders of Belgian jazz of his generation and one of Belgium's most lyrical and poetic jazz saxophone players. As a rhythm section, Augusto also managed to get the Italian bassist Manolo Cabras (Toots Thielemans, Enrico Rava, Charles Gayle, ...) with whom he has been making music for more than 20 years and the Czech drummer Marek Patrman, an indispensable player of the Belgian jazz scene. Cabras and Patrman are the proverbial 4 hands on one belly.

Piroddas piano work (often simple and melodic, but at times also rambunctious and nervous) coincide remarkably well with the musical sensitivity of Ben Sluijs. The contrast between these two worlds makes their music very open and unpredictable. Cabras and Patrman, who can assume both a leading or supporting role, ensure that the piano and sax enjoy a maximum in freedom.
