Lucie Vítková is een Tjechische componiste, improvisator en performer (accordeon, hichiriki, mondharmonica, stem en tapdans). Ze studeerde accordeon aan het Brno Conservatorium (2010) daarna compositie, vervolgens aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Den Haag en het California Institute of the Arts in Valencia (VS). Voor haar PHD deed ze onderzoek aan de Universität der Künste in Berlijn. Sinds 2016 is ze gevestigd te New York, waar ze haar onderzoek verder zette als visiting scholar aan de Columbia University bij prof. George Lewis. Nu werkt ze aan de New York University.
Haar composities richten zich op sonificatie (composities gebaseerd op abstracte modellen afgeleid van fysieke objecten), terwijl ze in haar improvisatiepraktijk kenmerken van afzonderlijke ruimtes onderzoekt door de interactie tussen geluid en beweging. In haar recente werk is ze geïnteresseerd in de muzikale erfenis van Morse Code en de sociaal-politieke aspecten van muziek en kunst in relatie tot het dagelijks leven.
Na zijn studie aan het conservatorium van Antwerpen vertrok Raphael Malfliet in 2014 voor een periode van drie maanden naar New York om zich te laten inspireren door de stad en zijn muzikanten. Zijn ervaringen daar maakten zijn interesse in hedendaagse klassieke muziek en composities wakker. Hij focust intensief op hoe hij deze interesses kan verbinden met 'free' geïmproviseerde muziek en exploreert nieuwe klankmogelijkheden op de elektrische bas met behulp van een boog en 'prepared' technieken.
Tijdens zijn muzikaal omzwerven heeft hij al het geluk gehad te spelen met en te leren van geweldige muzikanten zoals Lucie Vitkova, Mary Halvorson, Fay Victor, Carlo Costa, Todd Neufeld, Flin Van Hemmen, Sarah Bernstein, Pascal Niggenkemper, Randy Peterson en Michael Attïas. In zijn werk als componist heeft Raphael een persoonlijke stijl ontwikkeld waarin esthetische ideeën uit moderne/hedendaagse klassieke muziek zijn verwerkt en een compositorische taal ontworpen voor improvisatoren.

Lucie Vítková is a composer, improviser and performer (accordion, hichiriki, harmonica, voice and tap dance) from the Czech Republic. She graduated in accordion performance at Brno Conservatory (2010) and studied composition, has a Master Degree from the Royal Conservatory in Den Haag and the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia (USA) and did a PhD research at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. Since 2016, she has been based in the City of New York, where she´s done her research as a Visiting Scholar at the Columbia University with Prof. George Lewis (2016-2018) and continues at the New York University.
Her compositions focus on sonification (compositions based on abstract models derived from physical objects), while in her improvisation practice explores characteristics of discrete spaces through the interaction between sound and movement. In her recent work, she is interested in the musical legacy of Morse Code and the social-political aspects of music and art in relation to everyday life.
After graduating The Conservatory of Antwerp in 2014 Raphael Malfliet left for New York for a period of three months to get inspired by the city and it's musicians. His experiences there made him become interested in contemporary classical music and composition, Focussing intensely on how to connect those interests with free improvised music, he started to explore new sound possibilities on the electric bass using a bow and prepared techniques.
During this process he was lucky to have played with and learned from great musicians such as Lucie Vitkova, Mary Halvorson, Fay Victor, Carlo Costa, Todd Neufeld, Flin Van Hemmen, Sarah Bernstein, Pascal Niggenkemper, Randy Peterson and Michael Attïas. In his work as a composer Raphael has been developing a personal style which incorporates aesthetic ideas from modern/contemporary classical music and a compositional language designed for improvisers.
